Summary:
The primary responsibility of a blood draw specialist is to aid in carrying out a variety of assigned tasks, problem solving, training, and providing recommendations for workflow improvement.
Position Responsibilities:
Prior experience in blood draws, specimen labeling, specimen centrifugation, record maintenance and decontamination, updating patient data, etc.
Acquires and safeguards specimens following established protocols.
Clearly and courteously explains the venipuncture (blood drawing) process and/or other specimen collection procedures (e.g. urine or fecal).
Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Completely comprehends physicians' instructions.
Matches lab requisition forms to specimen tubes, labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens based on test orders.
Verifies all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
Prepares specimens for transportation.
Stores specimens at required temperatures, places samples in proper containers/tubes, accurately labels them, and follows specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity. Adheres to OSHA and DEP regulations.
Participates in annual departmental training sessions.
Answers phone calls and provides laboratory results to address inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid certification in Phlebotomy for the state of employment where required
At least 6 months of experience in venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital settingProficient in Microsoft Office Suite
High School Diploma or GED
2-4 years of experience
