Role Overview:
The primary responsibility of a blood collection specialist is to aid in executing various assigned tasks, problem-solving, training, and offering suggestions to enhance workflow.
Key Responsibilities:
Proficient in conducting blood draws, labeling samples, centrifuging specimens, maintaining records and decontamination, updating patient details, etc. Collects and preserves samples following established protocols. Clearly and politely explains the venipuncture process (blood draw) or other specimen collections (e.g. urine or fecal) as needed. Demonstrates proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Ensures full comprehension of all physician's orders. Matches requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes samples according to test orders. Verifies test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy. Prepares specimens for transportation. Stores samples at the required temperature, places them in suitable containers/tubes, accurately labels them, and follows specified procedures for transportation to maintain sample integrity. Adheres to OSHA and DEP regulations. Participates in annual departmental trainings. Addresses phone calls, interprets laboratory results to address inquiries.
Minimum Requirements: Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as mandated in specific states. At least 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a high-paced laboratory or hospital environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED with 1-4 years of experience.
