The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist with various assigned tasks, provide troubleshooting support, offer training, and suggest improvements to workflow.
Responsibilities include experience with blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging, data recording, decontamination, updating patient records, and more. Follows procedures for collecting and storing specimens accurately. Clearly and politely explains the venipuncture process or other specimen collection procedures to patients. Demonstrates proper techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles. Understands physicians' orders and matches up requisition forms with specimen tubes. Properly labels, centrifuges, splits, freezes, and packages specimens for transport according to test orders. Maintains specimen integrity during transportation. Adheres to OSHA and DEP regulations. Attends annual departmental trainings. Answers phone calls and provides laboratory results.
Qualifications: At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. High school diploma or equivalent required, along with Phlebotomy Certification. Minimum of 2 years of experience.
