Description:

Summary: Primary duty of a phlebotomist is to aid in performing various delegated tasks, troubleshooting, training and suggesting workflow improvements.

Duties:

Experience in blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging, maintaining records and decontamination, updating patient data, etc.

Gathers and preserves specimens following established protocols.

Clearly explains the venipuncture process and other specimen collections in a polite manner. Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

Fully comprehends all doctor orders.

Matches requisition forms to specimen tubes.

Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens based on test order.

Compares test requisitions with labels to ensure accuracy. Prepares specimens for transport.

Stores samples at correct temperature, puts them in appropriate containers/tubes, labels accurately, follows specific procedures for transport to maintain specimen integrity as outlined in protocols. Adheres to OSHA and DEP rules.

Participates in yearly departmental trainings.

Answers phone calls, provides laboratory results for inquiries.

Minimum Requirements:

Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as needed in certain states. At least 6 months of experience doing venipunctures in a busy lab or hospital setting. Proficient in MS Office Suite. High School Diploma or equivalent
