Welding Technologist

The position of Welding Technologist at our Bowling Green, KY location requires a highly skilled individual who can provide technical support and expertise in welding-related matters. This role involves managing and improving welding data to enhance productivity, as well as reviewing customer and standard requirements.

As a Welding Technologist, you will be responsible for developing welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment. Your knowledge of production specifications, properties of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles will be essential in solving fabrication problems. Additionally, you will conduct research and development investigations to develop new welding processes, improve existing methods, and test new fabrication procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and validate weld process sheets and welding parameters for production welding stations.
  • Track and manage consumption rates and mixture of shielding gas system.
  • Maintain and monitor supplies of welding consumables and weld wire, identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Oversee gas consumption mix and welding wire.
  • Coordinate and conduct welder training classes for support technicians.
  • Provide technical support for robotic program on assembly processes.
  • Analyze weld coupons and provide technical assistance to assembly areas.
  • Ensure compliance with customer welding specifications on cut & etch test and welding defect process.
  • Implement process improvements to address weld failures and defects.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of weld parameters, audit reports, and welding reference library.
  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance program.
  • Stay updated on new technologies and apply them to improve welding process.
  • Address special requirements of operational employees, quality staff, and engineering changes.
  • Participate in training and develop in-house training programs.
  • Manage financial resources of welding equipment and support technical staff.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.
  • Develop welding techniques and procedures for robotic welding operations.
  • Inspect weld joints and conduct tests to ensure compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Conduct certification tests for personnel qualification.
  • Plan and develop welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welding programs for automated welding systems.
  • Ensure critical documents for automated welding system programs are developed and approved.
  • Evaluate new developments in welding field for possible application to current processes.
  • Assist with welding equipment setup and communication.
  • Perform robotic weld gun calibration.
  • Verify weld equipment performance.
  • Perform assembly tasks.
  • Report all unsafe acts and conditions immediately.
  • Promote safety in the plant and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support achievement of plant quality objectives/goals.
  • Maintain the appearance of a World Class Facility.
  • Support implementation of the 5S’s for clean and organized work areas.


  • Required:
  • Minimum of 3 years of welding experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with robot programming, preferably with Fanuc.
  • Desired:
  • Automotive experience.
  • 4-year degree in welding engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Certification as Weld Inspector (CWI) and American Weld Society (AWS) preferred.
  • Experience in developing weld parameters, process sheets, and analyzing weld sections.
  • Project experience from concept to installation is a plus.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point).
  • Understanding of inverter based power supplies and robotic interfacing.
  • Thorough knowledge of AWS and GMAW principles.
  • Demonstrated welding proficiency.
  • Knowledge of advanced high strength steels, aluminum alloys, and magnesium alloys.
  • Ability to diagnose and engineer solutions to welding problems.
  • Experience with welding systems and software.
  • Ability to quickly learn new systems.
