Lead Structural Engineer

The role of Lead Structural Engineer in Washington, DC involves leading teams in the design of world-class structures for various projects such as power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline, airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government, and military facilities. The Lead Structural Engineer will oversee the entire design and construction process, making adjustments to plans as necessary to meet budget constraints or client requirements.

  • Direct the design of projects from conception to completion, ensuring that project managers’ needs and requirements are met.

  • Prepare documentation for structural equipment, including specifications, data sheets, RFQs, bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.

  • Review vendor drawings and collaborate with suppliers, clients, and other engineering disciplines for data interface.

  • Participate in project development, including scheduling, budgeting, staffing, and construction planning. Manage change orders effectively.

  • Apply extensive knowledge of structural concepts, codes, and procedures to deliver high-quality engineering services.

  • Find innovative design solutions for complex projects using expertise and experience.

  • Review production drawings and project-related data to ensure accuracy using CAD software.

  • Supervise construction administration, including resolving design-related issues and conducting field inspections and material testing.

  • Lead field inspections, measurements, and calculations for both public and private clients.

  • Create and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors. Identify new business opportunities and ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Contribute to sales and marketing efforts, identifying key pursuits.

  • Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to meet financial targets and standards.

  • Prepare and present project budgets, cost estimates, and performance reports.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the structural engineering practice. Mentor less experienced engineers.

  • Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes.

  • Maintain effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Comply with company and site safety policies.

  • Perform any other assigned duties.


  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program, or a Bachelor of Science in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program with FE exam completion.

  • A Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering is a plus.

  • Have at least 7 years of experience in structural engineering, preferably with EPC projects.

  • Hold a Professional Engineering License (PE) (preferred).

  • Possess expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures, as well as strong familiarity with structural design codes (e.g., IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE7). Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in leading discipline design for large projects and delegating tasks to team members. Ability to lead and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and the ability to solve problems methodically and analytically.

  • Detail-oriented and skilled in facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving.

  • Capable of performing quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Willingness and ability to travel.
