Lead Accountant

About the role:

We are seeking a Lead Accountant for a medium-sized company located in Hamilton, ON. Responsibilities for this position include providing accounting, advisory, taxation, and valuation/litigation support services. As the Lead Accountant, you will utilize your extensive accounting experience and deep understanding of accounting principles and company practices to perform complex accounting tasks and financial analyses.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare various types of client engagements such as audits, reviews, and notice to reader.
  • Adhere to professional and company standards.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Manager and provide updates on engagement progress.
  • Report significant issues to the Manager and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies and irregularities in client financial records, documents, and reports.
  • Interact directly with clients, government agencies, and other business contacts as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative ideas and approaches to enhance work processes.
  • Promote the company at community events and actively participate in networking opportunities.
  • Attend internal and external training courses to enhance accounting and assurance knowledge.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Deliver internal training sessions for junior staff members.
Requirements and Skills:
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or possess an equivalent diploma or relevant experience.
  • Preferably have completed a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Possess a minimum of 2 years of experience in public accounting performing similar tasks.
  • Demonstrate superior time management skills, efficiently handling tasks and managing file budgets.
  • Have extensive knowledge of and experience working with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and not-for-profit organizations (NPOs).
  • Have a strong working knowledge of Sage 50 and/or QuickBooks, Caseware, TaxPrep, or a similar tax program.
  • Possess a solid understanding of business, accounting, management, and practice development principles.
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey messages and gather information.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and the ability to establish strong relationships with clients and external business contacts.
  • Previous experience with owner-managed small to mid-size businesses and not-for-profit organizations would be an advantage.
