Lead Fire Engineer

The Lead Fire Engineer will assume a leadership role in the design of multi-discipline projects and supervise the creation of comprehensive fire protection packages, which includes fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management, and life safety measures. This role will involve working on a variety of projects for different clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take charge of designing, specifying, and coordinating multi-discipline fire protection systems, such as wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water fire suppression systems.
  • Supervise the fire water supply infrastructure, including fire water storage tanks, fire pumps, underground and aboveground distribution piping, and related components.
  • Lead the design of outdoor fire suppression systems, including monitors, spray systems, and exposure protection systems.
  • Direct the development of addressable and non-addressable voice evacuation fire alarm systems, including initiation devices, supervision devices, and audible/visual notification appliances.
  • Manage releasing systems for pre-action, foam/water, and clean agent systems.
  • Review fire protection calculations for quality assurance, including hydraulic analysis of fire water supply and demand, battery calculations, and voltage drop calculations.
  • Lead the examination of building and life safety requirements, considering factors such as building area and height limitations, construction types, fire resistive assemblies, opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, building egress, and active and passive smoke management systems.
  • Supervise construction administration, which includes coordinating with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues, reviewing contractor shop drawings and calculations, conducting field inspections, and testing fire protection systems.
  • Lead project teams in conducting site evaluations and documenting existing fire protection systems.
  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Establish strong relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors, and identify opportunities for new business.
  • Manage sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
  • Ensure that customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
  • Oversee the development of cost proposals and qualification statements, meeting targets and standards for financial performance.
  • Create and present project budgets and cost estimates, reporting on project performance.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the fire protection team.
  • Ensure compliance with QA/QC processes.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program and possess 7 years of experience in fire protection engineering (or equivalent). OR
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection or a related Engineering Technology field from an ABET accredited program, have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and possess 7 years of experience in fire protection engineering. OR
  • Hold a Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering and possess 6 years of experience in fire protection engineering.

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Possess expert knowledge of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and refinery/industrial API guidelines.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Show demonstrated critical thinking skills and the ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Have the ability to lead project/discipline design teams.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing and potential clients.
  • Hold a Professional Engineer (PE) License (Preferred).
  • Possess NICET certification in Water-Based System Layout (Preferred) or NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems (Preferred) or NICET certification in Special Hazard Systems (Preferred).
