Lead Fire Engineer

The Lead Fire Engineer will assume a leadership position in the development of multi-disciplinary projects and oversee the creation of comprehensive fire protection packages, which include systems for fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management, and life safety. This role will involve working on a variety of projects with diverse clients.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Head the design, specification, and coordination of fire protection systems, such as wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water fire suppression systems.
  • Supervise the fire water supply infrastructure, encompassing fire water storage tanks, fire pumps, underground and aboveground distribution piping, and associated components.
  • Lead the design of outdoor fire suppression systems, including monitors, spray systems, and exposure protection systems.
  • Direct the development of both addressable and non-addressable voice evacuation fire alarm systems, which include initiation devices, supervision devices, and audible/visual notification appliances.
  • Manage the deployment of releasing systems for pre-action, foam/water, and clean agent systems.
  • Conduct quality reviews of fire protection calculations, including hydraulic analysis of fire water supply and demand, battery calculations, and voltage drop calculations.
  • Take the lead in evaluating building and life safety requirements, taking into account factors such as building area and height limitations, construction types, fire resistive assemblies, opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, building egress, and active and passive smoke management systems.
  • Oversee construction administration, including collaborating with field personnel to address design-related installation issues, reviewing contractor shop drawings and calculations, conducting field inspections, and testing fire protection systems.
  • Lead project teams in carrying out site evaluations and documenting existing fire protection systems.
  • Create and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Foster productive relationships with current clients, customers, and contractors, while identifying new business opportunities.
  • Manage sales and marketing initiatives and identify key pursuits.
  • Ensure the satisfaction of customers’ goals and expectations.
  • Oversee the development of cost proposals and qualification statements, meeting targets and performance standards.
  • Prepare and deliver project budgets and cost estimates, reporting on project performance.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction in the fire protection practice.
  • Ensure compliance with QA/QC processes.
  • Ensure adherence to company and site safety policies.
  • Perform additional assigned duties.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program and 7 years of experience in fire protection engineering (or equivalent). OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection or a related Engineering Technology field from an ABET accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 7 years of experience in fire protection engineering. OR
  • Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering and 6 years of experience in fire protection engineering.

Additional Requirements:

  • Expertise in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and refinery/industrial API guidelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking ability and the capacity to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Capability to lead project/discipline design teams.
  • Must be able to obtain and sustain access authorization to existing and potential clients’ facilities and data.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License (Preferred).
  • NICET certification in Water-Based System Layout (Preferred) or NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems (Preferred) or NICET certification in Special Hazard Systems (Preferred).
