Lead Fire Engineer

The Lead Fire Engineer will assume a leadership position in the development of multi-disciplinary projects and overseeing the creation of comprehensive fire protection packages, which include fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management, and life safety measures. This role involves working on a variety of projects with different clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Take charge of designing, specifying, and coordinating multi-disciplinary fire protection systems, such as wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water fire suppression systems.
  • Supervise the fire water supply infrastructure, including fire water storage tanks, fire pumps, underground and aboveground distribution piping, and related equipment.
  • Lead the design of outdoor fire suppression systems, such as monitors, spray systems, and exposure protection systems.
  • Direct the development of addressable and non-addressable voice evacuation fire alarm systems, which involve initiation devices, supervision devices, and audible/visual notification appliances.
  • Manage the implementation of releasing systems for pre-action, foam/water, and clean agent systems.
  • Conduct quality reviews of fire protection calculations, including hydraulic analysis of fire water supply and demand, battery calculations, and voltage drop calculations.
  • Lead the assessment of building and life safety requirements, taking into account building area and height limitations, construction types, fire resistive assemblies, opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, building egress, and active and passive smoke management systems.
  • Oversee construction administration, which includes coordinating with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues, reviewing contractor shop drawings and calculations, conducting field inspections, and testing fire protection systems.
  • Lead project teams in conducting site evaluations and documenting existing fire protection systems.
  • Create and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with current clients, customers, and contractors, as well as identifying new business opportunities.
  • Manage sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction goals and expectations are achieved.
  • Manage the development of cost proposals and qualification statements, meeting financial performance targets and standards.
  • Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates, reporting on project performance.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the fire protection practice.
  • Ensure adherence to quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) processes.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Perform any other assigned duties.

Qualifications:

  • Holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program and possesses 7 years of fire protection engineering experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). OR
  • Holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection or a related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program, has successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and possesses 7 years of fire protection engineering experience. OR
  • Holds a Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering and possesses 6 years of fire protection engineering experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Displays expert knowledge of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and refinery/industrial API guidelines.
  • Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and the ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Has the ability to lead project/discipline design teams.
  • Must have the capability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing and potential clients.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License (Preferred).
  • NICET certification in Water-Based System Layout (Preferred) or NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems (Preferred) or NICET certification in Special Hazard Systems (Preferred).
