Automation Specialist

Job Description

The Automation Specialist II is responsible for providing advanced support throughout all stages of a controls project. This includes research and concept development, estimation support, selection of components, network design, panel design, troubleshooting of devices, and PLC and HMI programming. They are also responsible for on-site installation and debug, as well as post-sales support, with minimal supervision. An exceptional Automation Specialist II possesses a high level of knowledge and understanding of commonly used controls engineering concepts and PLC programming, and has the ability to lead and mentor entry-level Automation Specialists. They are willing to participate in training to enhance their knowledge and skills, with the goal of advancing to higher levels within the field.


  • Comprehend AC/DC control systems and read component cut sheets effectively.
  • Utilize computer software for design engineering and PLC programming.
  • Resolve system issues and effectively communicate their status verbally and in writing.
  • Assist in the design and delivery of successful control systems.
  • Create layouts for electrical circuits or power and control distribution systems.
  • Support the Systems Checklist for projects during field installation and startup.
  • Develop electrical diagrams efficiently and identify and correct errors in diagrams created by themselves and others.
  • Take the lead on project teams when it comes to controls.
  • Generate functional system test plans for use during field commissioning and provide written descriptions of system operations for technical documentation.
  • Effectively communicate with team members and keep the Administrative Coordinator informed of schedules, utilizing voicemail and email diligently to maintain good team relations.

  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Repetitive typing and data entry.
  • Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Required to undergo drug screening and fit-to-work physical.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position allows for a flexible work schedule. General office hours are Monday to Friday, from 7am to 4pm or 8am to 5pm. Working hours may vary when conducting job site visits to fulfill project requirements.



  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and control device networks for PLCs.
  • Ability to interpret written specifications, contract drawings, and project requirements to develop comprehensive designs that meet electrical design standards.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task, with attention to detail and the ability to follow directions.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to customer facilities and work non-business hours based on project and customer needs.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or Computer Engineering and Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the field or a related area.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to obtain airport security clearance as needed.
