Building Design Engineer

Required qualifications for this position include previous experience in manufacturing and a four-year college degree.

Summary of the Position:

The role necessitates the expertise and capability to create, plan, and oversee the development of architectural structures, foundations, and civil engineering needs for buildings. A crucial aspect of this position is effective project management of both external and internal contractors to ensure cost efficiency and timely installations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop functional layouts for buildings and devise dependable foundations for specialized machinery.
  • Utilize 2D CAD software to design, document, and create layouts for building structures, equipment placements, and plant utilities.
  • Conduct project analysis to assess feasibility and generate budgets and project return on investment (ROI).
  • Specify requirements for bid packages, gather quotations, negotiate pricing and delivery, review contracts, submit project authorizations, and award contracts to vendors for buildings, foundations, utilities, site civil work, and plant cranes.
  • Establish and maintain visual schedules for building and foundation projects using project management software (MS Project).
  • Manage and direct work performed by various subcontractors for construction projects related to plant buildings and offices (e.g. construction management).
  • Supervise project crew personnel to ensure proper installation and assembly of designs.
  • Oversee the quality and safety of external contractors’ work during the installation of buildings, foundations, and utilities such as HVAC, plumbing, and railroad systems.
  • Handle the modification, redesign, and repair of existing structures.
  • Possess extensive knowledge and understanding of building structural design as well as the design of foundations for heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with plant utilities, civil engineering, building codes, and environmental regulations.
  • Corporate position responsible for fulfilling the architectural and structural requirements of three plants, including two joint venture plants.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes and standards, placing utmost priority on plant and personnel safety through comprehensive analysis, validation, and due diligence.

Additional Skills (preferred but not required):

  • Aid in mechanical designs using SolidWorks software.
  • Experience in rigging and drafting written engineered lift plans.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Architectural or Structural Engineering.
  • Demonstrated skills in project management (through education and/or experience).
  • Professional Engineering License (preferred).
  • 3-5 years of experience in the manufacturing industry.
  • Knowledge of permitting, building codes, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in reading structural blueprints and generating 2D CAD drawings.
