Building Design Specialist

Position Summary:

The role of the Building Design Specialist is to effectively layout, create, and oversee the progress of building structures, foundations, and site civil needs. This position entails managing multiple contractors to ensure cost-efficient and timely installations.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design functional building/plant layouts and establish dependable foundations for unique machinery.
  • Utilize 2D CAD software to create layouts, designs, and documentation for building structures, plant/equipment layouts, and plant utilities.
  • Analyze projects to determine feasibility, develop budgets, and calculate project ROI.
  • Generate detailed specifications for bid packages, acquire quotations, negotiate prices and delivery terms, review contracts, submit project authorizations, and award contracts to vendors for buildings, foundations, utilities, site civil work, and plant cranes.
  • Develop and maintain visual schedules for building and foundation projects using MS Project or other project management software.
  • Manage various sub-contractors for plant building and office projects as a general contractor (e.g. construction management).
  • Supervise Project Crew personnel during the installation and assembly of designs.
  • Ensure the quality and safety of external contractors’ work during the installation of buildings, foundations, and utilities (e.g. HVAC, Plumbing, & Railroad).
  • Handle the modification, redesign, and repair of existing structures.
  • Possess extensive knowledge and understanding of building structural design and heavy machinery foundation design.
  • Familiarity with plant utilities, civil engineering, building codes, and environmental codes.
  • Act as the corporate representative responsible for addressing architectural and structural needs across all three plants, including two joint venture plants.
  • Ensure that designs comply with applicable codes and standards, prioritizing plant and personnel safety through rigorous analysis, validation, and due diligence.

Non-Essential Duties (nice to have skills):

  • Provide assistance with mechanical designs using SolidWorks.
  • Demonstrate experience in rigging and draft written engineered lift plans.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Architectural/Structural Engineering.
  • Strong background in Project Management, either through education or practical experience.
  • Professional Engineering License is desirable.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the manufacturing industry.
  • Knowledge of permitting processes, building codes, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in reading structural blueprints and generating 2D CAD drawings.
