Summary:

Responsibilities of a blood draw specialist include aiding in various assigned tasks, problem solving, training, and proposing workflow suggestions.

Duties:

Experience in blood collection, labeling specimens, centrifuging samples, documenting maintenance records and decontamination, updating patient data, etc.

Gather and store specimens following standard procedures. Clearly explain the venipuncture (blood collection) process or other specimen collection processes as needed.

Utilize straight needles and/or butterfly needles effectively.

Understand all physician orders. Match lab requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as per test requisites.

Verify test requisitions against scripts for accuracy. Prepare specimens for transit.

Properly store specimens at required temperatures, place them in suitable collection containers/ tubes, label accurately, and comply with transport protocols for specimen integrity maintenance. Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations.

Participate in annual departmental training sessions.

Handle phone calls, provide lab results information for inquiries.

Minimum Requirements:

Required Phlebotomy certification in the state of employment, as necessary.

At least 6 months of experience conducting venipunctures in a high-volume lab or hospital environment

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, High School Diploma or GED required
