Overview:
The main role of a blood draw specialist is to aid in executing various assigned tasks, problem solving, training and proposing work flow suggestions.
Responsibilities:
Experience conducting blood withdrawals, marking samples, spinning samples, documenting maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. Gathers and preserves samples in accordance with established procedures. Clearly and courteously explains the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (e.g. urine or fecal) as needed. Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Possesses a full understanding of all physicians' orders. Matches lab requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labels, spins, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order. Verifies all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy. Prepares specimens for transport. Stores sample specimens at required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/tube, labels accurately, follows specific transport procedures outlined by protocol to maintain specimen integrity. Complies with OSHA and DEP regulations. Completes annual department trainings. Answers phone calls, reads lab results to address inquiries.
Minimum Requirements: Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required in certain states. At least 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a high-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED
