Underground Utilities Estimation Specialist

Estimator – Heavy Civil / Underground Construction

Summary of Position

Looking for an experienced Senior Estimator to be part of our expanding team specializing in Heavy Civil and Underground Construction. The ideal candidate should have in-depth knowledge in estimating subterranean utility infrastructure, horizontal drilling, trenchless technology, and tunneling projects. Responsibilities include providing precise estimates, creating proposals, assessing project uncertainties, and aiding project teams from preconstruction to project completion.

Main Duties

  • Lead the development of detailed, accurate, and competitive cost estimates and bid proposals for underground construction projects.
  • Examine project plans, specifications, geological surveys, and contract documents to ascertain project scope and potential risks.
  • Participate in pre-bid sessions, site inspections, and conduct on-site assessments as necessary.
  • Generate comprehensive material takeoffs for labor, supplies, machinery, and subcontracted activities.
  • Develop project timetables and sequence to support estimate formulation.
  • Request, assess, and negotiate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
  • Analyze different construction techniques, methods, and value engineering opportunities to enhance competitiveness.
  • Draft Requests for Quotations (RFQs) and evaluate vendor and subcontractor submissions.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and project management teams during the estimating phase.
  • Engage in project handover and initiation meetings to ensure smooth transition from estimation to construction.
  • Assist project teams with budget evaluations, pricing change orders, and cost assessments during construction.
  • Coach junior estimators and contribute to enhancing estimating strategies.
  • Stay informed about market prices, labor efficiency, equipment expenses, and trends in the industry.
  • Build and maintain solid relationships with clients, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and industry associates.
  • Promote a culture of safety throughout all project planning and implementation stages.

Ideal Project Background

Applicants should have estimating experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Tunnel Boring
  • Service Ducts
  • Sideways Drilling (SD)
  • Auger Excavation
  • Drilling and Placement
  • Pipe Installation
  • Invisible Construction
  • Underground Pipe Networks
  • Drainage and Sewage Systems
  • Large Pipeline Establishment
  • Earthworks Infrastructure

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Over 7 years of estimating experience in heavy civil, underground, or invisible construction.
  • Proven experience in estimating tunneling, service ducts, boring, or similar underground projects.
  • Thorough understanding of excavation, shoring, tunneling methods, subterranean utilities, and civil construction procedures.
  • Ability to prepare estimates from concept to final design.
  • Proficient in estimating software like Clearview, B2W Estimate, HeavyBid, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Capable of handling multiple estimates while meeting deadlines.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for project site visits as required.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with Integrated Project Delivery, CMAR, Progressive Design-Build, or Creative Delivery projects.
  • Understanding of geotechnical surveys and underground risk evaluation.
  • Background in carrying out feasibility reviews and value engineering.
  • Experience leading estimating teams and providing guidance.

Work Environment

  • Full-time role.
  • Office-based with occasional travel to project locations.
  • Around 75% office work and 25% field work.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for site visits.
