Application Engineer

The Opportunity

An innovative Application Engineer is being sought by our client who thrives on resolving intricate technical issues, engaging with customers directly, and transforming real-life hurdles into feasible engineered solutions.

This position is not your typical desk job in engineering. The Application Engineer occupies a crucial role at the crossroads of engineering, sales, product development, and customer relations, acting as the technical mastermind throughout the entire customer experience—from initial concept and system design to installation, troubleshooting, and continuous support.

The ideal individual will blend profound electrical/electronics expertise with curiosity, problem-solving skills, and effective communication abilities to collaborate seamlessly with engineers, plant staff, sales experts, and business leaders.

If you have a passion for unraveling technical mysteries, crafting solutions for demanding industrial settings, and witnessing your creations come to life in the field, this role could be an exceptional fit.

What You'll Do

As a pivotal technical asset for both customers and the sales team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing in-depth knowledge of the company's products, technologies, and applications within industrial sectors.
  • Collaborating with sales professionals to grasp customer needs and recommend suitable technical solutions.
  • Transforming customer requirements into practical, manufacturable system and product solutions.
  • Customizing standard products and systems to meet specific application demands.
  • Devising tailored solutions incorporating internal products and third-party technologies.
  • Conducting engineering calculations and technical analysis to facilitate product selection and suggestions.
  • Serving as the primary technical contact point for customers throughout the sales and implementation process.
  • Clearly articulating product capabilities, system functionality, and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Creating application drawings, technical documents, specifications, and training resources.
  • Supporting system design, testing, verification, installation, programming, commissioning, and startup initiatives.
  • Troubleshooting equipment and systems on-site, remotely, and via electronic assistance.
  • Delivering technical and product training to customers, sales teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Testing new and existing equipment to verify compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Aiding in the evaluation of new products and assessing their readiness for field deployment.
  • Offering clear feedback to engineering teams concerning product performance, customer demands, field issues, and potential enhancements.
  • Participating in the design and enhancement of new products and features.
  • Coordinating external engineering resources when specialized expertise is essential.
  • Accompanying sales professionals on client visits and contributing to technical presentations and conference calls.
  • Delivering technical responses to RFIs and RFQs.
  • Recognizing additional customer needs and prospects that could lead to future products, applications, or business expansion.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience in technical field, applications engineering, or similar roles.
  • Experience in oil & gas, mining, power generation, heavy industrial, or analogous environments.
  • Familiarity with sensor technologies, industrial monitoring systems, electronics, and network communications.
  • Proficiency in industrial communication and control protocols, such as:
    • Modbus
    • 4–20mA
    • Relay logic
    • Other common industrial communication protocols
  • Knowledge of hazardous locations, classifications, and equipment ratings.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple technical projects and conflicting priorities.
  • Aptitude for translating intricate technical information into understandable language for customers and non-technical users.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.

Additional Experience That Will Set You Apart

Experience with any of the following would be particularly valuable:

  • Allen-Bradley controls
  • Ladder logic
  • HMI systems and interface design
  • AutoCAD
  • Industrial gas detection or sensor systems
  • System commissioning and field startup
  • Mechanical systems or strong mechanical aptitude

The Person Who Will Thrive Here

We're seeking someone naturally inquisitive who delights in solving challenging problems that lack obvious solutions.

You are likely to excel in this role if you are a self-motivated individual who can think quickly, troubleshoot methodically, communicate confidently, and transition seamlessly between the engineering office and the plant floor.

You should also be at ease working in industrial settings that may encompass power plants, underground mines, oil & gas facilities, and other heavy industrial sites.

Travel & Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 10% travel to customer and other business sites.
  • Occasional travel to Canada and Mexico may be necessary.
  • Candidates must hold or be capable of obtaining a valid passport.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when required for equipment installation, testing, or on-site assistance.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This role presents more than just backing an existing product line. You will have a direct influence on how products are implemented, enhanced, and developed while collaborating closely with customers to tackle significant safety and operational challenges.

You will become part of a cooperative, hands-on team environment where technical proficiency is highly regarded, and engineers witness the tangible impact of their efforts.

Benefits

The company provides a comprehensive benefits package that features:

  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Medical insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
