The primary responsibility of a blood collection specialist is to assist with assigned tasks, provide training, troubleshoot issues, and recommend workflow improvements.
Responsibilities:Experience with blood draws, specimen labeling, specimen centrifugation, data recording, decontamination, patient information updates, etc. Proper collection and storage of specimens following established procedures. Clear and courteous explanation of venipuncture and other specimen collection processes as needed. Demonstrating techniques using straight needles or butterfly needles. Full comprehension of physician orders. Matching requisition forms to specimen tubes. Correct labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing of specimens as required. Double-checking test requisitions against script for accuracy. Proper packaging of specimens for transport. Storing specimens at correct temperatures and following specific protocols for transport. Adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations. Attendance at annual department trainings. Handling telephone calls and providing laboratory results to meet inquiries.
Minimum Requirements:Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment where required. At least 6 months of experience with venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
High School Diploma or GED
At least 2 years of experience
