Ingredients Purchaser

DESCRIPTION

The Ingredients Purchaser will be responsible for managing inventory and procuring raw materials required for the production of finished goods at a designated manufacturing facility in Boston, MA.

The ideal candidate will possess exceptional planning, organization, and mathematical skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word is required. Experience in negotiating material contracts, particularly in food commodity purchasing, is an advantage. The individual should also have strong problem-solving abilities and be skilled in making sound business decisions. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the role involves working with external suppliers and internal stakeholders. The ability to mentor and guide direct reports is crucial, and an interest or experience in the food industry is advantageous.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the replenishment of raw materials by coordinating with various vendors across the country. Monitor lead times, storage requirements, and shelf life of all materials.
  • Participate in periodic vendor plant audits with the QA manager.
  • Ensure accuracy in raw material pricing and freight costs.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through the review of vendor price brackets, freight differentials, and alternative suppliers.
  • Review daily exception reports, collaborate with scheduling to expedite materials when needed for production.
  • Manage material issues in coordination with the Quality department, acting as a liaison between the company and vendors for returns, discards, and reimbursements. Notify Accounting of anticipated credits or payments.
  • Assist R&D in procuring new ingredients for customer formulations.
  • Demonstrate crisis management skills and multitasking abilities to address issues related to raw materials used in production at various plants.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all plant personnel, available 24/7 to resolve any raw material-related issues that could impact plant operations.
  • Coordinate the transfer of raw materials between plants as needed for formula shifts.
  • Collaborate with the Logistics Department to manage collect truckloads.
  • Ensure utilization of weekly backhauls by coordinating with the packaging team and Ryder.
  • Work with accounting to resolve any discrepancies in invoices using DocuWare.
  • Provide coverage for other plants when buyers are out of office.
  • Submit weekly Supplyside variance reports to the plant, confirming recounts and making adjustments.
  • Review dead inventory and short shelf raw material reports.
  • Manage and execute quarterly inventory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in business or a related field. Three to five years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
